Position Objective

About Us

We are a leading sustainable forestry and manufacturing enterprise with sawmilling operations that convert timber resources into high-quality lumber and value-added wood products. We are looking for a diligent, reliable and technically skilled Artisan Fitter and Turner to support plant availability through safe, accurate and effective maintenance, repairs, machining and fabrication.

The Role:

The Artisan Fitter and Turner is responsible for performing preventative, predictive and breakdown maintenance on sawmilling and timber processing equipment to ensure maximum plant availability, reliability, safety and production efficiency. The role involves fitting, machining, repairing, installing and maintaining mechanical equipment and components within the sawmill production environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and Repairs: Execute minor and major repairs, plan and carry out maintenance work, diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Sawmill Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, repair, replace and align bearings, shafts, gearboxes, couplings, chains, belts, hydraulic and pneumatic components, log infeed/outfeed systems, saws, edgers, trimmers, chipper systems, sorting and stacking equipment and conveyors.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to company safety standards, follow lockout and hot work permit procedures, use required PPE, maintain good housekeeping and liaise effectively when unsafe equipment must be stopped.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Complete maintenance work orders accurately, report defects and breakdowns, record work completed and parts used, identify critical spares and maintain machine history.
  • Technical Ability/Machining and Fabrication: Use manuals, drawings, technical specifications and spares lists; operate/maintain machinery and workshop tools such as lathes, milling machines, drills, grinders and presses; manufacture, modify and refurbish machine components.
  • Continuous Improvement: Conduct precision measurements, participate in root cause analysis, identify opportunities to reduce maintenance costs and improve plant performance.
  • Teamwork: Work independently and as part of the maintenance team, assist other artisans where possible.

Qualifications and Expertise:

  • Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics.
  • N2 qualification and relevant trade test certificate.
  • 3–5 years’ sawmill maintenance experience or experience in another production plant environment will be preferable.
  • Experience in preventative, predictive and breakdown maintenance, including planned maintenance systems.
  • Strong fault-finding ability and technical ability to maintain critical sawmilling machinery.
  • Knowledge of bearings, machine alignment, hydraulics, pneumatics, gearboxes, drives and conveying systems.
  • Skilled in the operation and setup of lathes, milling machines and workshop tools.
  • Knowledge of different applications and uses of metals.
  • Computer literacy will be advantageous, especially for job card completion.
  • Good communication, teamwork, reliability and precision work ethic.
  • Must be willing to work shifts, overtime in emergency situations at short notice, standby duties and year-end shutdowns.
  • Must be medically fit and fit to work at heights.
  • Must be able to communicate in English and Afrikaans

Travel & License

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and own reliable transport.
