About the Position

Plantation Sawmill is looking for an experienced and hands-on Sawmill Operator to join its team. The successful candidate must have practical experience operating a mobile or portable sawmill, specifically a Lucas Mill, Peterson Sawmill or similar swingblade sawmill.

This is a hands-on position requiring someone who understands the sawmilling process, can operate machinery confidently and safely, and takes pride in producing accurate, quality timber.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a Lucas Mill, Peterson Sawmill or similar swingblade sawmill.
  • Saw logs into timber according to specified dimensions and requirements.
  • Assess logs and determine the most effective cutting approach to maximise timber recovery.
  • Ensure accurate cutting, consistent sizing and quality finished timber.
  • Set up, adjust and maintain sawmill equipment.
  • Perform routine machine checks, cleaning and basic maintenance.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues or equipment faults.
  • Handle timber and assist with the loading, offloading and movement of logs and sawn timber.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
  • Follow all operational and workplace safety procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Several years of practical experience operating a sawmill.
  • Proven experience with at least one of the following:
    Lucas Mill
    Peterson Sawmill
    Swingblade sawmill
  • Good understanding of timber conversion and sawmilling processes.
  • Ability to read measurements and work accurately to cutting specifications.
  • Knowledge of sawmill machinery, blades and basic equipment maintenance.
  • Physically fit and capable of performing manual work.
  • Reliable, hardworking and able to work independently.
  • Good attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality and safety.

Advantageous

  • Experience working with hardwood timber.
  • Experience with different timber species and log sizes.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot basic machinery issues.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be practical, dependable and self-motivated, with a strong work ethic. They must be comfortable working in a sawmill environment and able to take responsibility for their machinery, work quality and daily output.
Remuneration

R6,000 – R8,000 per month, depending on experience and skill level.

Only candidates with previous hands-on experience operating a Lucas Mill, Peterson Sawmill or similar swingblade sawmill will be considered.
